Article summary and critique – barbarathelibrarian Magic

Four weeks! Yikes! Seems like a short period of time for these students go construct a business and make money in Second Life. But, if you wanted students to learn fast – that is the ticket! Wagner’s students were given a Herculean task but seemed to pull it off really well, even if they didn’t make much money. Just renting real estate, creating the “artifacts” and setting up a store must have been demanding but exciting.
The YouTube videos were a great way to learn – I have used them myself. I can certainly identify with the requirements for the technology to be optimal…how can you create when the object you “rezz” takes several minutes to appear? How do you organize the student groups? How do you measure learning? Who excelled, who stood and watched?
The survey that Wagner created was a good indicator or student satisfication: 5 students strongly agreed that : “the second life assignment has given me an opportunity to practice business ideas”(Wagner, 19(3) ).
This article was most enjoyable…wish there was more description on the actual projects completed.

The “Stumbling, bumbling article” by Grassian and Trueman – was a delight for me, I know one of the librarians and, of course, being a librarian myself I agree that we “go where the users are”. I volunteer at the library at Info Island International. The librarians there are wonderful – dedicated, and professional in the truest sense of the word. Librarians are so networked. They participate in virtual conferences, ( cheaper than flying and booking a hotel in RL and for some of us, more convenient). Library school students at San Jose University – the site next door to Info Island – are able to find mentors and guidance from professional librarians. One of the authors is employed at my university – in another state. She was a big help to me when I first entered second life. Libraries: university, public or medical, are wonderful places to go in second life – for information and sometimes, just to hang out and chat with someone who will take the time to help.

I am in Second Life every day. I have good friends and, just like in the workplace, or on Facebook, there are people with whom I interact daily – people I may never meet in Rl but with whom I have similar interests - Libraries, education, sailing and literature. Before I was a librarian I was a phlebotomist and a lab technician for twenty years. I watched and learned from the best. Some of the learning needed to be “hands-on”. Finding a vein is a technique that would be difficult to simulate in Second Life. However, the author makes some excellent points: Cornell’s research into post-traumatic stress disorder, flying phobias and simulations to help individuals using simulation, even disaster planning are all useful and valuable applications that have genuine merit in Second Life. With costs in Real Life a real problem, I can see how many applications will provide companies, hospitals and universities with valuable training resources, and individuals with instruction that they might not have been able to afford.
Second Life is still unpredictable. Someone disappears from view: did they “crash”? Did they get bored? Did someone call on the phone in RL? Does real life take precedence when one is attending a work-related seminar? Doctor or student – being a “newbie” affects the experience in Second Life. These are all factors that researchers and Second Life organizers need to keep in mind.
The medical community will definitely benefit from Second Life applications. Administrators’ reactions vary – depending on exposure to the facts, their own experiences and the costs involved. When all these factors are taken into account, I feel that Second Life has a lot to offer. I agree with Daniel Scott and I enjoyed this article.

Cognition System
Review of article for MAT 616

Distributed Cognition or DC is a psychological theory, developed approximately 1980 by Edward Hutchins. Hutchins, former professor at University of California, San Diego, developed a theory which outlines the interaction of human with technology. Learning is accomplished by the use of external devices, such as computers.
He wrote:

In their article, Ligorio, Cesarini and Schwartz discuss implications of teachers’ use of virtual technology to facilitate learning. Intersubjectivity, the interaction of two individuals to generate new learning is introduced and it is emphasized that this new learning is a social process (Piaget).

Positive learning experiences were measured, student feedback valued, and recommendations for future learning experiences were provided.

Today I explored Active Worls's Virtual Program. http://www.activeworlds.com/edu/awedu.asp

I guess I am spoiled, or maybe it was the free browser, but after using Second Life, I think I was looking for more graphics, sound and usability. For a chat interface, it might not be bad, but I guess I am always looking for the nice graphics, sound and music.

Active Worlds Educational Universe
The Educational Universe is an entire Active Worlds Universe dedicated to exploring the educational applications of the Active Worlds Technology.

It is our hope that by making the Active Worlds Technology available to educational institutions, teachers, students, and individual programs at lower costs; educators will be able to explore new concepts, learning theories, creative curriculum design, and discover new paradigms in social learning.

Distributes any item that CAN be distributed - objects, landmarks, notecards, textures, photos, boxed items etc.

- Allows you to give notecards in many languages from the same kiosk, tailored to the customers viewer language. ie: english will receive the english version, french viewers will recieve the french version.

- Rotates multiple textures in the same kiosk, AND allows you to give out different items for each texture. Rotate speed can be adjusted.

- Some kiosk models have customer controlled next/back arows, letting the customer rotate through textures to find the one they want.

- Runs up to 1000 kiosks from one server.

- An in world backup system allows your system to keep working should the server fail.

- The included subscription server lets customers subscribe to your mailing list, letting you distribute to them directly in the future. It also allows you to send them Landmarks , notecards and updates etc.

- 28 kiosk designs included, or your can make your own. Kiosks can even be given away and STILL distribute your items.

Bringing technology into the picture...

One of the greatest enjoyments for me is learning the new technology that is being offered in SL and how it links the internet, web sites, moodle (sloodle), museums, library catalogs (gotta love those libraries) and open access journals and book depositories. Building a platform for Language Arts is very exciting to me. I love to build and would be interested in anything to do with building and books, links, technology and access.

I have used a book making tool in SL and find it to be a great way to give a free book to anyone. I am the creator of the book, so i am allowed to make as many copies as I wish. I choose only copyright free images, or i made my own images from sl photos. I love photography in sl, it is fun and free. Uploading is 10L but sometimes it is worth it. I use some photos for multiple projects.
